PREPARING CHILDREN FOR KINDERGARTEN PRE PRIMARY EDUCATION AND BEYOND

We must invest time and energy in focusing on the self help skills be it at school or home like eating on their own wiping the face, hand wash and looking after their personal possessions .
We need to cultivate sense of responsibility and make them aware of their immediate surroundings as not to create dirt around them, ample use of dustbin, not to waste food and eat on their own.

PRE PRIMARY EDUCATION

Involves developing and following routines. The virtue of punctuality regularity and responsibility is best learned at this stage.

The School conducts the assembly, recess and classes at regular time, we follow the Time table and kindergarten students must learn the art of time management through that. At home the onus is on the parents to make and follow the routine of waking up, sleeping, eating and playing hours and use regularity in bathing, washing and brushing etc. It has often been observed that parents take these things for granted and reach late to the school or sleep late thereby depriving the child of sufficient sleep which results in the child being cranky and upset in the school. This is the best age to form habits amongst children before habits turn out to be their erratic behavior pattern.

Read aloud help them in their spoken flow of language, accent punctuation and modulation. Also this is a pre-requisite to children’s memory.
Another good idea is to keep them away from useful banter and instead involve them in meaningful literacy activities.
Storytelling, rhyme recitation, model reading completes the pattern of listening attentively also small quotations and reading aloud from the book are handy tools for improving the aural skills.

UNDERSTAND THE CHILDS FEELINGS

The routine change though simple is must for letting the child have fun and yet be ready for the school. The minute child steps into the school, he has to have identity of his own. So it is good to work on his or her name and pronounce it properly. Start calling them by name and not pet or nickname, often read picture books to them and it is good to work on their motor skills like paper tearing and pasting, collage making, using harmless scissors and eating with spoon holding, pencils and cutlery etc. Wiping their mouth and art of greeting others will win them instant admiration.

Keep track of the vaccination records. Go for the thorough health checkup. Once we have established a personal care routine like usage of the toilet, basic hygiene, dress self and eat on their own- they are inching towards Kindergarten learning.

Also, look after social and emotional aspect of interacting with people in the school, requesting for health and assistance, overcoming separation anxiety from the parent are some pre requisite and also control overwhelming emotions. If they learn to manage themselves they turn out to be more confident.
